The ring felt unusually heavy on her hand as Dara gripped the steering wheel. She was at the last stoplight before home, and still in disbelief at what had just transpired. When she arrived at the empty house she made a beeline for the sink, splashing her face with cold water several times before glancing down at her left hand again. The ring was still there with the ensconced ruby gleaming brightly, more luscious and deep than a pomegranate seed. It was the same shade as Lilliannaâs lipstick.
Daraâs thoughts began to drift at that notion, back toward meandering dreams and unspoken fantasies, but she reined them back in. What a disaster. Tonight she had nearly confessed that she was practically in love with Lillianna straight to her face.
So, so guilty, she chided herself. She had thought that her heart was going to burst. For the first dozen mild touches she had been absolutely paranoid that Lillianna was going to realize that she had the biggest crush on the planet. Her skin felt like it was made of rice paper and entirely transparent. She wanted to cuddle with her boss, yes, but it did not feel as good as it should when Lillianna didnât how she liked her. Though maybe this was for the best that she had said nothing in the end. It had shocked her to find out that her boss was a lesbian, but perhaps that was worse. After all, now instead of an unattainable straight woman Lillianna was simply just not interested. If she had actually been into her she would not have needed to pay her to pretend: she could have just asked her out for free. Whatever it was that her boss felt compelled to throw money around to prove, Dara was not special beyond being readily available. Which left her wondering: why was Lillianna really doing this?
Pretending to be engaged potentially toed the line on legality, and whether or not it crossed the line into fraud depended entirely on why Lillianna wanted her to pretend, which Dara still had no clue about. It was a bit late to worry about that though, as the first half of the money had already been deposited in her account, and now she even had a ring on her hand. She was at least one step ahead of being scammed herself, so it wasnât like she was being duped unless she was about to get kidnapped and have a kidney removed for sale on the black market. Dara winced at the thought, looking sadly at her abdomen in the bathroom mirror after wiping water off her face with a towel. Goodbye, kidney, sacrificed thoughtlessly on the altar of yet another, hopeless love. She needed to quit doing this; she only had two kidneys after all, or perhaps only one after all was through with this trip.
But that was silly. This was her boss, and even if Markov Incorporated was a medical technology company that Dara still
